Happy New Year from Iceland (and Back) ❄️

We just returned from our third trip to Iceland—a place that keeps pulling us back. There's something about those otherworldly landscapes and genuinely warm people that resonates deeply. It's dark and cold for much of the year, yet Icelanders have built a culture of gathering—neighbors meeting at "hot pots" after work, striking up conversations in heated swimming pools. They've figured out how to create warmth and community even in the harshest conditions.

It got me thinking about the entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders I work with. You're doing something similar—creating warmth in cold places, building community where gaps exist, turning your values into tangible impact. Whether you're running a purpose-driven business or leading a mission-focused organization, you're choosing this path because you believe the work matters.

So let's make 2026 the year we amplify our impact. 🎯

In this newsletter, I'm sharing a free program to help entrepreneurs launch their social impact idea, ways to be more intentional about your business's footprint, strategies for nonprofits to measure and communicate impact, and an update on my growing focus on exit planning for purpose-driven business owners. Read on to find what fits where you are right now.

Here's to deeper impact, clearer strategy, and building warmth in cold places. Let's make 2026 count.

Turn Your Idea Into Action 💡

I'm thrilled to be co-facilitating the Social Entrepreneur Bootcamp this March alongside Dr. Tamara Wilkerson Dias through the Community Investment Collaborative (CIC).

This pilot program builds directly on years of community research—surveys, focus groups, and conversations with social entrepreneurs across Charlottesville. What we heard consistently: people have incredible ideas to create change in their communities, but navigating the path from concept to action feels overwhelming.

The Bootcamp addresses this head-on. Through two interactive in-person sessions, participants will clarify their social impact vision, explore organizational pathways, build a concrete action plan, and connect with local resources and fellow changemakers.

This program is free and specifically designed to support under-resourced and underrepresented leaders creating solutions for their own communities. Graduates are also eligible to apply for Community Impact Microgrants of up to $2,500.

Know someone with a community-driven idea? Applications are open now through February 2nd. Early applicants (by January 19th) help us shape session timing and content.

Thank you to the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation for making this important work possible. 🫶🏽

Broadening My Impact: Exit Strategy & Business Brokerage

This year, I'm leaning more heavily into business brokerage and exit planning—a natural extension of the work I've been doing with purpose-driven entrepreneurs.

Over the past few years, I've helped dozens of business owners think through their exit strategies. For the last 18 months, I've been deepening my expertise by working alongside an experienced broker. Now I'm ready to do more of this work myself.

I've joined the International Business Brokers Association (IBBA) and I'm working toward my Certified Business Intermediary (CBI) designation. But while the education is crucial, the credentials matter less to me than the outcome: helping business owners who've built something meaningful transition it to the right hands.

For most business owners, selling is the biggest financial transaction of their lives. It's also deeply personal—you're not just selling assets, you're handing over something you've poured yourself into. That deserves care and expertise. Here's what I'm focused on:

Working with businesses valued under $2M
This is where I want to focus—small and mid-sized businesses that are the backbone of our communities. These deals require just as much sophistication as larger transactions, but owners in this range often have fewer resources and less guidance.

Supporting underrepresented entrepreneurs
Women- and minority-owned businesses are consistently undervalued in the market. While I'm honored to represent all business owners, I'm particularly excited about helping underrepresented entrepreneurs capture the full value of what they've built.

Free exit readiness consultations
If you're thinking about selling in the next 3-5 years, let's talk now. Most owners wait too long to start planning, which limits their options and can cost them significantly. A simple conversation today can help you understand what your business might be worth, what makes it more valuable, and what timeline makes sense.

Know someone thinking about an exit? I offer free consultations to business owners exploring their options. No pressure, just clarity. Find out more about my services, and then respond to this email to set up a time to talk.

For Small Business Owners: Your Impact Matters More Than You Think

Every business creates ripples—in your community, your industry, the environment. But are you thinking strategically about the impact you want to make? Here are three ways to get more intentional in 2026:

Map your current impact: Take stock of where you're already making a difference. Who benefits from your business beyond your customers? Your employees, suppliers, local economy? Start by acknowledging what's already happening—you're likely doing more than you realize.

Define your values, then align your operations: What matters most to you? Environmental sustainability? Fair wages? Supporting other local businesses? Pick 2-3 core values, then look for one concrete way to better align your operations with each one. Small, consistent changes compound.

Tell your story: Your customers, employees, and community want to know what you stand for. Share your impact efforts authentically—not as marketing fodder, but as genuine commitment. People connect with businesses that care about more than just profit.

Want to dig deeper? I work with business owners to develop impact strategies that feel authentic and achievable—not performative or overwhelming. If you're wondering how to be more intentional about your business's footprint, let's talk.

For Nonprofits: Up-Level Your Impact Story

You're doing important work, but are you capturing it in ways that resonate with funders, volunteers, and the people you serve?

Tracking impact can feel like it’s taking valuable time away from your mission. But the right data—paired with compelling storytelling—can transform how people understand and support your mission. Here's how to get started:

Ask better questions: Design your data collection around outcomes, not just activities. In addition to, "How many people did we serve?" ask, "What changed for the people we served?" Build simple feedback loops—short surveys, follow-up calls, exit interviews—that capture the actual transformation your work creates.

Pair numbers with stories: Data shows scale, but stories show impact. "We provided job training to 150 people" becomes compelling when you add: "Like Maria, who went from unemployed for two years to managing a team of five within six months." Use real voices (with permission) to bring your metrics to life.

Create a simple dashboard: You don't need fancy software. A one-page dashboard with key metrics helps your board, staff, volunteers, and funders see progress at a glance. Update it regularly and use it to guide decisions, celebrate wins, and spot challenges.

Need support with your nonprofit's strategy, systems, or storytelling? Whether it's impact measurement, strategic planning, board governance, or something else entirely, I'd love to explore how I can help.
