Greetings from a Winter Wonderland ❄️

We got snow this week here in Central Virginia—unexpected, beautiful, and a good reminder that not everything goes according to plan. Which feels fitting as we wrap up the year.

I'm not much for New Year's resolutions—they tend to feel like shoulds. But I'm all about intentions. Intentions are about direction, not perfection. They're about being thoughtful and deliberate as you move into a new year.

This newsletter is designed to support that kind of reflection. Whether you're a business owner, nonprofit leader, or thinking about your next chapter, I've included questions and insights to help you get clear on what matters as you head into 2026.

Read on for:

  • Thinking About Selling Your Business? Have a free, confidential conversation about business value and exit strategy

  • Year-End Reflection for Nonprofit Leaders Seven questions to guide your planning

  • Setting Intentions for 2026 Questions for small business owners who want to move into the new year with intention

Wishing you a warm and wonderful holiday season. I hope enjoy some time off for reflection and renewal—whatever that means to you.

Thinking About Selling Your Business?

When Ethan and I owned Blue Ridge Bucha, people would ask me about our exit strategy and I'd just stare at them blankly. We didn't have one until we suddenly needed one—because we were ready for the next adventure.

If you're thinking further ahead than we did, good for you. And I'd love to talk with you. ☎️

I'm currently gathering information for a new venture focused on business transitions, and I'm offering free, confidential consultations to business owners who are thinking about an exit in the next few years. It's a chance for me to learn from your situation, and it's a chance for you to get guidance on questions like:

  • What's my business actually worth?

  • What can I do now to increase its value?

  • How do I prepare for a smooth sale?

  • What should I be thinking about that I'm not?

If selling your business is on your radar—even if it's still a few years out—let’s have a conversation. It's free, confidential, and useful for both of us.

Setting Intentions for 2026: Questions for Small Business Owners

As you think about the year ahead, here are 7 questions to help you set intentions that align with what actually matters to you—not just what you think a business owner "should" be doing:

1. What aspects of running my business energized me this year, and what drained me? The work that energizes you is often where you add the most value. The work that drains you might be work you need to delegate, systematize, or stop doing altogether.

2. Is my business serving me, or am I serving my business? Did you build your business to create a life you want, or has it taken over your life? If the answer makes you uncomfortable, that's useful information for 2026 planning.

3. What would need to change for me to work fewer hours without losing revenue? This question forces you to think about efficiency, delegation, pricing, and systems. You don't have to implement everything at once, but identifying what's possible helps you see where to focus.

4. What does success actually look like for me—beyond the revenue number? Revenue matters, but it's not the only measure of a healthy business. Do you want a greater impact in your community? A stronger team? More values-aligned clients? More time for creative work? Get clear on what you're building toward.

5. What's one thing I kept doing this year out of habit, not strategy? Every business has these—tasks, clients, services, or routines that made sense once but don't anymore. What can you let go of to make room for what matters now?

6. If I could only improve one aspect of my business operations this year, what would have the biggest impact? Maybe it's your financial systems, your client onboarding, your marketing, or your team structure. Pick one thing and do it well rather than spreading yourself thin trying to fix everything at once.

7. What support do I need that I've been trying to do without? Whether it's hiring help, getting a bookkeeper, working with a consultant, or joining a peer group—what would make running your business feel less isolating or overwhelming?

Take some time with these questions as you wrap up the year—and give yourself bonus points if you write your answers down! The clarity you gain will make your 2026 planning more grounded in what you actually want, not just what you think you should achieve.

Year-End Reflection for Nonprofit Leaders

Before the year is out, set aside time for reflection. You can work through these 7 questions on your own, or better yet, gather your team—or a group of peers— and discuss them together. You’re sure to surface insights you can actually use:

1. What were our favorite mission moments this year? Not your biggest wins by the numbers, but the moments where you felt most connected to why you do this work. When did you see your mission come alive?

2. Where did we see the clearest evidence that our work made a difference? What outcomes, changes, or results showed you that what you're doing matters? This could be data, but it could also be observations or milestones that demonstrated tangible impact for the people you serve.

3. What feedback from the people we serve surprised us or changed our thinking? The people you serve see your work from a perspective you can't get anywhere else. What did your clients, members, or community tell you this year that shifted your perspective or revealed something you hadn't considered?

4. Where did we spend time and energy that didn't move the mission forward? This isn't about blame—it's about clarity. What meetings, programs, partnerships, or initiatives took up a lot of resources without much impact? When you stop doing things that aren't serving your mission efficiently, you free up resources for the things that are.

5. When did we feel most stressed or stretched thin—and why? Was it a capacity issue? A systems issue? A timing issue? Understanding the why behind your stress points helps you plan differently, not just push through again next year.

6.What did we learn about our financial sustainability this year? Did any revenue streams prove more reliable or unreliable than expected? Were there hidden costs that surprised you? Is your funding too dependent on one source? Understanding your financial patterns helps you build resilience, not just survive year to year.

7. If we could only focus on three things in 2026, what would they be? This forces prioritization and helps you see where your team's energy and conviction actually are. If everyone's answers align, you've found your focus. If they don't, you've uncovered something important to address.

The insights that come up will make your 2026 planning clearer and more grounded in operational realities. And if you want to talk through how to use what you're learning to strengthen your organization's mission and impact, get in touch—I'd be glad to help.

How My Practice Has Evolved (And What I’ve Learned About Purpose-Driven Work)

I've been building my consulting practice for over three years now, and I'm still figuring things out—just like every business owner I work with. But one thing has gotten clearer this year: the clients I do my best work with are the ones running purpose-driven organizations. It doesn't matter whether it's a nonprofit or a small business. What matters is that the work means something to them beyond just making a living. They're building something that reflects their values, serves their community, or addresses a problem they care about.

A purpose-driven organization has a clear "why" beyond profit or growth. That doesn't mean profit doesn't matter—it does. You can't make a positive impact in your community if you can't keep the lights on. But these leaders are also building something that matters to them personally. The work gives them a sense of meaning.

I've realized that when I work with purpose-driven leaders, the work feels different. These are people who are involved in their organizations—they know what's happening day-to-day because they care about it. And that makes the consulting work more effective. We're not just checking boxes or chasing growth for growth's sake. We're figuring out how to build something that lasts and stays aligned with what matters. Whether we're working on strategic planning, operations, or an ownership transition, having clarity about purpose makes the hard decisions easier.

If you're running a purpose-driven organization and you're thinking about how to strengthen it, streamline it, or set it up for what's next, let's talk. That's the work I want to be doing in 2026.
